#25: Stoic masters, the road to AI and new social media

January 11, 2021

Ponder this quote 💭

““An unexamined life is not worth living.” - Socrates

In the room with a true master - Dorian Yates

This conversation with Dorian Yates makes me thankful for the internet. As a six-times Mr Olympia, Dorian was the best bodybuilder in the world for a significant period of time and is still regarded today as one of the greatest sportsmen in that field.

When you listen to him, you are immediately blown away by the humility and wisdom this man possesses. It’s clear achieving mastery in that one field in his life has transferred to other areas. It’s also clear that he also had to overcome the difficulties, insecurities and challenges that we are all plagued with. A much more spiritual and chilled out version now, he shares his wisdom on how to be the best at what you want to do and how to live an amazing life.

“They say don’t put all your eggs in one basket. But I only had one egg, and I only had one basket” - Dorian Yates

Lessons from a Stoic - Focus on what you can control

Maria is a journalist turned professional poker player - and her journey is an interesting story of an amateur diving deep into a new field and, through deep understanding and work, finds she can perform at levels of mastery. After having studied poker players for a year, she became so good she left her job as a journalist and pursued it full-time.

Listen to her share her lessons, her tools of thought that she uses to navigate the high-stress world of poker and you’ll no doubt learn to be a better thinker yourself.

Key lesson: Focus on making the right decision, even if the outcome turns out to be a bust

Why the next era of social products are here

I don’t know about you, but I was shocked by the appearance of so many new people on Telegram this week. The other big name is Signal, though it is something I haven’t yet used.

It turns out that many people are not happy with Whatsapp’s new privacy regulations. Though this is not something new. Other companies have been developing products to emphasise more security, privacy and respect for user data.

This has resulted in a second wave of social products that are now riding this new wave of demand. Read the article to gain a venture capitalist’s perspective on the industry and why a disruption is needed.

The AI Revolution: The Road to Superintelligence

This was a fantastic blog post, and one of my favourites. It gives a bird’s eye view of the path of computing and AI (Artificial Intelligence) and how we are inescapably on this path to “Superintelligence”. Sure, AI can be scary. But this is also a magical time, and it has the potential powers to create a new kind of world, one in which all can participate more freely and equally.

With fun illustrations and simple language, you will end up revering the author’s ability to break this complex subject down (and many others) and make it an enticing educational read to just about anyone.

The COVID coup

While a few months old, this piece is still an excellent piece of journalism, highlighting the largely orchestrated political tool we have all been experiencing, covid-19. With clear, well-referenced evidence, you’ll see how we have been duped by the authorities.

This pandemic has been used as a ploy and the working-class man suffers, i.e. all of us who still have to work for a living. Lack of leadership abounds, and the severe deficit in trust and actual knowledge of the virus and disease has resulted in a state of fear, confusion and helplessness across the world. We know we are being fooled, the question is, by how much? We know we are being manipulated, the question is, to what extent?
